Smart Phone Video Volunteers

In the Smart Phone Video Volunteers initiative, young adolescent girls and boys are encouraged to make films on issues of social relevance plaguing their own communities using smart phones video cameras. Under this campaign, students learn to make films and digital stories that will help give a wider audience to any issue they find important. In 2013, we worked on the Menace of Open Defecation, which was supported by UNICEF.

The initiative helps to open windows between the slums and the wealthier communities that surround them. Hauntingly stark and sometimes beautiful imaginary captured by children have a way ingraining themselves in the minds of people who see them. These snapshots can be more powerful than carefully written articles or proposals and are also a great way for the children to feel like they have a voice. Additionally, the use of technology by the children teaches them skills that could serve them well in the future.
